Code Breaker is a card trading game that can be used across the school curriculum and with a wide age range. Before you can play Code Breaker with your class you will need to make a set of trading cards. Cards are made in matching sets of three to a learning topic relevant to your class.
For example a matching set of cards could be:
- A mathematical equation, a graph and a table of values.
- Or, a Chinese word, its English translation, and the Chinese character used to represent the word.
- Or, a country, its capital city, and its flag.
A full set consists of 75 cards (3 x 25 matching sets). WORD files for producing the cards are included with your purchase. Each card has a code letter on its back.
It is possible to make a smaller set of cards for a smaller class. Code Breaker needs a minimum of about 15 students (and correspondingly 15 sets of cards) to work well.
The Code Breaker game starts with a 90 second animation depicting a bank break-in which you show to your class on your IWB. It is the task of your students to assist the bank robber to break into the bank safe by providing him with the correct code.
A pause in the animation allows the teacher to explain the game and to deal three random cards to each student. The students then leave their seats and start trading cards in order to gain a matching set. When a student thinks that they have obtained a matching trio they may come to the IWB and test it by punching the code combination into the bank vault. The vault will only open if the code is correct.
A game of Code Breaker takes about 20 minutes for a class to complete.
