In Snapshot, teams compete to guess the subject of a picture which is hidden behind a pixelated grid that is slowly being revealed. Snapshot is a resource which you as teacher can use to design your own game. Different teachers may play the game differently and the game rules may depend upon how the teacher wishes to relate it to their subject. It is a Powerpoint file consisting of about 70 Snapshot pictures, a scoreboard, and master slides to allow you to create your own Snapshot slides.
There are four different styles of play:
PICK FOR PICK
- In this style the teams all send one nominated person to the IWB. On each teams turn the person at the board unmasks any pixel then the rest of the team has one guess at what the picture might be. The teams take turns until the subject of the picture is correctly guessed and the picture is revealed. A correct guess earns the team a point which may be registered on the scoreboard.
BLACK SQUARES ONLY
- This is the same as pick for pick only it is made more challenging by adding the rule that only black squares may be unmasked.
- This game is played by one team only. All the players remain at their seats. When the teacher presses the 'auto-pick 15' button, 15 pixels will be unmasked over a 15 second period. A timer clock is started and the team must guess the picture before time runs out. A correct guess earns a point.
ALL PLAY
- In all play all teams play but there is no taking of turns. After the teacher has pressed the 'all-play' button the picture begins to unmask pixel by pixel. Anyone and everyone may call out until someone correctly guesses.
There are many ways which Snapshot could be used in a classroom, but typically teachers relate this game to their subject by including curriculum questions as separate slides within a game. For example teams are asked to work on a mathematics problem and come up co-operatively with an agreed answer. Correct answers earn the right to compete in the next Snapshot round. Or, perhaps, the teacher presents a slide with a five question history quiz and those teams with four or more correct get to play the next Snapshot round. The playing of the game becomes a reward for correct work on the curriculum material.
Snapshot fosters co-operative learning, maximises the interactive capabilities of the IWB and is a highly engaging learning tool in your classroom.
